More Free Nursery Hours Coming!

(From September 2025 for Working Parents) For many parents in the UK, childcare for young children is one of the largest expenses. Good news: starting in September 2025, the UK’s free childcare hours program will significantly expand, potentially saving families hundreds of pounds per month and thousands per year.

What’s Changing?

Currently, free nursery hours are provided under different rules depending on the child’s age:

Child’s Age Free Hours Per Week (for working parents)
9 months – 2 years 15 hours (from September 2024)
2 – 3 years 15 hours (from April 2024)
3 – 4 years 30 hours

From September 2025:

Child’s Age Free Hours Per Week (for working parents)
9 months – 4 years 30 hours

This means that working parents of children aged 9 months to 3 years will be able to receive 30 free hours of childcare per week, instead of the current 15.

Who can benefit?

The service is available to parents who:

  • Are working (employees, self-employed, or directors of LTD companies).
  • Earn at least the minimum wage (around £195 per week).
  • Have applied for free hours.

Significant Savings!

If the cost of an hour at nursery is around £10, then by increasing free hours from 15 to 30 per week for 38 weeks a year, your savings could be approximately £5,700 annually—a substantial boost to your family budget!

Personal Tax Account (PTA): What is it and why do you need it?

If you live and work in the UK, you should know about an important tool called the Personal Tax Account (PTA) – it’s a personal online tax cabinet where all information about your income, taxes, pension contributions, tax codes, and more is collected.

What is PTA? PTA is an online service from HMRC that allows you to see all your tax information in one place. It’s like online banking, but instead of money, it’s your tax and income data.

In the Personal Tax Account you can:

  • View income and tax payment history.
  • Check and update your Tax Code.
  • Apply for a refund of overpaid tax.
  • Change personal data (address, name).
  • Check information about your service history and pension.
  • Track messages and notifications from HMRC.

Why is it important to have a PTA?

  • Control and Transparency: Without a PTA, it’s like you’re blindfolded – HMRC sees your data, and you might not even realize you’re overpaying taxes.
  • All HMRC services are gradually moving to PTA: Soon, all operations will only be through your personal account – no more paper letters.
  • Mandatory for Self-Employed: If you are self-employed, a PTA is absolutely necessary to submit declarations and pay taxes on time.
  • Useful for Employed Workers: If you are an Employee, a PTA is not mandatory, but it has many useful functions. For example, quickly check your tax code to avoid overpaying taxes, view your Employment History for 5 years, ensure your employer is actually paying taxes for you, and more.
